Welcome back to our video!Previously we got to know the Gate and the Hall of Four Heavenly Kings, today we’ll continue our exploration of this ancient temple.
在光孝寺天王殿的左側(cè),存有一處與中國禪宗歷史息息相關(guān)的文物遺址——洗缽泉。洗缽泉據(jù)傳為達摩祖師所鑿。
On the left side of the Hall of Four Heavenly Kings lies a heritage closely related to the history of Chinese Chan Buddhism, the Bowl-washing Spring.The spring is a well dug by Bodhidharma.
菩提達摩是南天竺香至國國王第三子,也是中國禪宗初祖。據(jù)傳,梁武帝普通元年(520),達摩祖師泛海來到廣州,曾在光孝寺駐錫弘法。為了取清泉、洗缽盂,他便挖掘了這眼水井。
As the King’s third son in the Kingdom of Pallava in ancient India, Bodhidharma was also the founding father of Chan Buddhism in China. It is said that in 520 A.D. during the Liang Dynasty, Master Bodhidharma gave Dharma talks at Guangxiao Temple soon after he arrived in Guangzhou by sea.During this time, he dug this well for clean water to wash his alms bowl.
后來僧人們?yōu)榧o(jì)念達摩祖師立了一塊“達摩自天竺止于訶林”碑刻。在碑刻中,我們可以看到達摩祖師衣袖飄飄、一葦渡江的“超酷模樣”。正因這段被證實的歷史,光孝寺也被認(rèn)作是中國禪宗的起點。
Later, monks at the temple erected a stele in commemoration of his presence, on which it is inscribed that “Master Bodhidharma came from India and stopped at Kelin”. In the stele, Bodhidharma was depicted as an incredibly cool figure. As we can see, he is crossing the river on a reed with sleeves fluttering in the wind.And thanks to this association, Guangxiao Temple is naturally considered to be the cradle of Chan Buddhism in China.
【地藏殿與鐘樓】
The K?itigarbha Hall and the Bell Tower
人們常用“暮鼓晨鐘”一詞形容寺院的生活。只看字面似乎是晨撞鐘暮擊鼓,其實不然,不論早晚都有擊鼓撞鐘,區(qū)別是早晨先撞鐘后擊鼓,晚上先擊鼓后撞鐘,順序不同。
Talking about Chan Buddhism, the phrase "morning bell and evening drum" is often used to describe the life in a monastery.Literally, it says “ringing the bell in the morning and beating the drum in the evening”, which is actually not so precise.In fact, the bell and the drum are played both in the morning and the evening.There is a difference, however, in the sequence of playing, the bell before the drum in the morning and reversed in the evening.
洪亮鐘聲可警醒群生,令三惡道眾生聞聲去苦得清涼;擊鼓,意在令眾生聞鼓聲,起生善破惡之心。
The sound of the bell makes the sentient beings mindful and alleviates pain in unwholesome realms.And the beats of the drum bring forth a mind of generating the wholesome and breaking the unwholesome.
鐘樓和鼓樓相對,鐘鼓分別置于兩樓的二層。遇到隆重法會時,則鐘鼓齊鳴,頗具莊嚴(yán)氣象。
The bell and the drum are placed on the 2nd Floor of a tower respectively, thus the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, which are opposite to each other, with harmonious bell chimes and drum beats to cause a solemn atmosphere for grand Dharma assemblies.光孝寺原有的那座鐘樓始建于明天順三年(1459),后廢。我們眼前的這個鐘樓是1990年經(jīng)過考古發(fā)掘,在原鐘樓的位置上復(fù)建的。
Here, the Bell Tower in front of us was rebuilt in 1990 at its original location, where the previously deserted one was built in 1459 A.D. during the Ming Dynasty.
這個鐘樓的一樓是地藏殿,供奉的是地藏菩薩。我們都知道,地藏菩薩的得名,是因其“安忍不動,猶如大地;靜慮深密,猶如秘藏”。他被認(rèn)為是一位愿力深厚的菩薩的原因,是他曾發(fā)下一個誓愿“地獄未空,誓不成佛。眾生度盡,方證菩提。”
The first floor of the tower is the K?itigarbha Hall, where K?itigarbha Bodhisattva is enshrined. This Bodhisattva is also known by his Chinese name Dizang, meaning Earth Treasure, because he is "as static as the Earth and as silent and profound as treasure." He is famous for his great vow of not willing to achieve Buddhahood until all the sentient beings are liberated and the whole Hell is emptied.
【伽藍(lán)殿與鼓樓】The Sa?ghārāma Hall and the Drum Tower正對鐘樓的是鼓樓。光孝寺原有的鼓樓,其始建年代是宋朝,為當(dāng)時光孝寺的住持空山和尚所建,后廢。這個鼓樓也是在1990年經(jīng)考古發(fā)掘在原位置上復(fù)建的。
Opposite to the Bell Tower is the Drum Tower.This new tower was built in 1990 at the place where the old one was excavated. The old tower was built by the abbot Kongshan in the Song Dynasty and later was deserted.
鼓樓一樓是伽(qié)藍(lán)殿,供奉的是佛教的護法伽藍(lán)菩薩。伽藍(lán)菩薩,廣義而言,泛指所有擁護佛法的諸天善神?!纲に{(lán)」是寺院道場的通稱。佛說有十八神保護伽藍(lán),統(tǒng)稱「十八伽藍(lán)神」, 多以伽藍(lán)菩薩(關(guān)公)形象為代表。
On the first floor of the tower is the Sa?ghārāma Hall, which enshrines a Sa?ghārāma protector. Sa?ghārāma protectors include all those gods and deities that support the Dharma.The term Sa?ghārāma is a metonymy often referring to a Buddhist temple. According to the Buddha, there are eighteen Sa?ghārāma protectors represented by Guangong, a deified military general in the Chinese folklore belief.
而光孝寺伽藍(lán)殿現(xiàn)供奉的是真武大帝塑像。在宋代,寺院曾改為道觀,這尊像就是當(dāng)時遺留下來的出土文物。雖然在地下淹埋多年,但卻作為十八伽藍(lán)之一,默默地守護著這座千年道場。
Instead of the representative Guanggong, the Taoist Great God of Zhenwu is enshrined in the Sa?ghārāma Hall of Guangxiao Temple. The statue of this Great God was unearthed as a relic of the Song Dynasty during which this temple was once converted to be Taoist. Beneath the earth for hundreds of years though, he kept his duty to protect the temple in silence as one of the eighteen.
祖師西來,送來佛心妙法;護法伽藍(lán),澤被嶺南眾生。希望廣大佛子得聞鐘聲,遠(yuǎn)離苦惱,早證菩提。希望諸位菩薩護法能夠加持全世界眾生,使之勇于面對全球肆虐的疫情和經(jīng)濟的困境。
The master from India brought the mind of the Buddha and the profound Dharma; And Sa?ghārāma protectors bless the sentient beings in Lingnan Region.With the blessing from them, we wish all Buddhist followers complete elimination of sufferings and quick attainment of Enlightenment.With their blessing, we sincerely hope people around the world are able to overcome this global crisis of severe pandemic and economic regression.
