Many English learners are struggling with one problem - how to train themselves to think in English. As shown in the diagrams above, too many ESL/EFL learners speak English as the diagram on the right shows.
The million dollar question is -
Can we learn or train ourselves to what's shown in the diagram on the left?
The answer is a big YES, because I have done it. Here I'm going to share with you a few strategies that helped me make it happen.
Strategy 1 - Use monolingual dictionaries
Many English learners use bilingual dictionaries, and when they look up a word, they would look at what it means in their first language and stop there. The truth is the translated explanation of too many words are not accurate at all. I myself realized this when I was about 15, and decided to borrow an oooold Longman Dictionary (you can't find the word 'internet' in it) from my neighbor, who happened to be an English teacher. Lucky me!
For example: articulate
Oxford:??
Longman ??
It can be quite challenging at the beginning. When you are looking up a word, you will find a dozen more new words in the explanation, and that's where many people give up. But I thought back then if I could figure out all those new words, I was actually learning so much more than just the original one word I was trying to check. I was a full-time high school student at that time. I got nothing else to do but study anyway.
Jack
