傳說王勃在滕王閣上寫完《滕王閣序》之后,便告辭走了。閻都督一邊讀一邊贊嘆,但他看到最后幾句時,不禁驚詫起來:閣中帝子今何在?檻外長江(留空)自流。

原來,王勃故意空下一字走了。閻都督和宇文鈞、吳子章等眾多名士,均不解其意。有人說,應該填“水”字,但顯得太直白了;有人說,應該填個“獨”字,又覺得太一般了。大家想來想去,總覺得找不到合適的字。
Originally, Wang Bo deliberately left without a word. Many famous figures such as Yan Dudu, Yu Wenjun, and Wu Zizhang did not understand his meaning. Some people say that the word "water" should be filled in, but it seems too straightforward.
于是,閻都督便派人趕往會館,恭請王勃返閣填字。使者受命來到會館,卻被王勃的書童擋住了。書童對使者說:“我家公子有言:'一字值千金’,望都督海涵?!笔拐邔⒃拵Щ睾?,閻都督暗自思量:人才難得,理應禮賢下士。于是帶著紋銀,前往會館求教。
So, Governor Yan sent people to the guild hall and respectfully invited Wang Bo to return to the pavilion to fill in the blanks. The messenger was ordered to come to the guild hall, but was blocked by Wang Bo's bookboy.
王勃見都督前來,拱手笑道:“何勞都督下問,不才早已將字留在寶閣了?!贝蠹乙苫蟛唤?,連聲追問:“才子墨寶,留于何處?”王勃大笑說:“空者,空也。閣中帝子今何在?檻外長江空自留?!贝藭r,眾人才恍然大悟,齊聲稱贊。
When Wang Bo saw the governor coming, he arched his hand and smiled, saying, "Why bother the governor to ask? I have already left the words in the treasure pavilion." ...At this moment, all the talents suddenly realized and praised in unison.
