The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting usoff from contact with our fellow human beings.

The world ofbusiness is one area in which technology is isolating us. Experts say, forexample, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to alarge central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, andaccountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. Theywould never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition,the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automaticallypaid into their bank accounts(賬戶), making paper checks(支票) unnecessary.No workers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from theiraccounts.

Another areathat technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once agroup experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small socialgatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience.Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphonesto build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too.Movies used to be social events. Now fewer people are going out to see a movie.Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear in television or computer.Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own livingrooms.

The latestresearch by the Chinese Women’s Daily and the Institute of Journalism under theChinese Academy of Social Sciences, aimed at investigating the relationshipsbetween parents and children, disclosed that nearly 60 million couples throughoutthe country felt they had failed as parents.

“I am not verysuccessful in educating my child. If I could live another life, I’d rather nothave any children,” a mother declared. Such frustration was prevalent in theanswers to the questionnaires. Some parents feel they lack means of educating,some find difficulty in communicating with their children, some feel totallylost at what their children should be taught – traditional Chinese moralitysuch as honesty, modesty, forbearance(忍耐;寬容) and caring, or the modern ethos(時(shí)代精神) ofcompetition? Educational experts read the answers to the questionnaires,analyzed the problems, and advised parents.

About 58.2percent of parents are worried about TV’s negative influence: children’sprograms are taking up too much homework time; too many foreign cartoons areneither “scientific nor interesting”; too many explicit love scenes andviolence; many TV plays are far removed from reality. –Parents want to know howto prevent these influences.

About 19.9percent of the parents complained about their children being too carefree withmoney. “Today’s children are spoiled.They will accept nothing but brand-name commodities. When celebratingbirthdays, they like to give luxurious parties and on festivals they expectexpensive gifts,” some parents said. Many parents agree that their children areignorant of hardship, thrift, hard work, and public ethics(道德準(zhǔn)則)

With theimplementation(落實(shí)) ofthe one-child policy, a new problem has become obvious: loneliness. Of thechildren who answered the questionnaires, 14.8 percent said they had no closefriend, and 17.6 percent often felt lonely.
