This beautiful sterling silver wine cooler, made by the Tiffany & Co. of New York, was produced during 1891-1902; as shown by the letter “T” marking on its bottom, only used while Charles L. Tiffany was president of the company. This piece is also stamped with a pattern number, “Tiffany & Co. Makers”, and “Sterling Silver”. The wine cooler is held up by four miniature paw feet, surrounded by a border of scrolling leaf forms, above which its body has been decorated by diagonal swirling incised lines. Both the upper rim and top of the lift off lid don floral forms and scrolling detail. The inside of the cooler contains a sterling silver cylindrical insert where the wine bottle is to be placed while the rest of the cooler is filled with ice. The entirety of the cooler weighs 88 troy ounces and measures approx. 11 ?” high and 10” wide. This wine cooler matches the pattern of the tea set from the 1892 Columbian Exposition also up for sale (Lot 536).
