--------------------------------------------------------------------------
一、兩者都表示“許多”,但 many 修飾或代替可數(shù)名詞(復(fù)數(shù)),與 few(少數(shù))相對(duì);而 much 用來(lái)修飾或代替不可數(shù)名詞(單數(shù)),與little(少量)相對(duì)。如:
many:
We don't have very many copies left.
You can't have one each. We haven't got many.
Many people feel that the law should be changed.
much:
Do you have much free time?
I don't have much money with me.
There was so much traffic that we were an hour late.
二、 關(guān)于many of 和 much of:
(1) 其后接名詞時(shí),該名詞通常應(yīng)是特指的(比如有the, these, those, my, our, Tom’s等修飾)。如:
many of:
Many of those most affected are elderly.
Many of these poems bear witness to his years spent in India and China
Many of the women are addicted to heroin and cocaine
much of:
He spends much of his time outdoors.
Much of his early work is concerned with the minutiae of rural life.
We have had to contend with the disinterest of much of the medical profession about this topic.
She didn’t eat much of breakfast.
正:She didn’t eat much breakfast.
There aren’t many of large glasses left.
正:There aren’t many large glasses left.
Many of students have read it.
正:Many of the students have read it.
Much of time was wasted.
正:Much of the time was wasted.
Not much of Denmark is hilly.
I’ve seen too much of Howard recently.
(5) 在人稱代詞前總是用many of或much of,其中的of不能沒有。如:
I didn’t eat much of it.
Many of us were too tired to go further.
You can’t see much of a country in a week.
How much of a job would it be to rebuild the garage?
not much of a
Then he’s not much of a partner.
That might not seem like much of an accomplishment.
三、兩者都可與 more 連用,其區(qū)別仍然是 many more之后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞,much more 之后接不可數(shù)名詞。如:
many more:
Television and radio needed many more women in senior jobs.
The latest techniques in oceanography are now available to many more scientists.
Many more questions were buzzing around in my head
much more:
But we are now a much more fragmented society.
Babies who sleep with their parents receive much more tactile stimulation than babies who sleep in a cot
His sincerity added much more authority to the story.
Many people support the government, but many more are against it.
In other comparable countries real wages increased much more rapidly.
Some children are much more aggressive than others.
Friendship is much more important to me than a stupid old ring!
many a:
I met him many a time in the bus.
Many a customer has been lost through negligence of service.
He's quaffed many a glass of champagne in his time.
注意,“many a+單數(shù)名詞”是一個(gè)十分正式的結(jié)構(gòu),在口語(yǔ)或非正式文體中一般都用 “many+復(fù)數(shù)名詞”代之。
五、與a great/good number of, a great/good amount of等表達(dá)不同,a great/good many后接名詞時(shí),不用介詞of。如:
a great/good number of:
It affords a livelihood to a great number of people.
This research has been in progress since 1961 and has yielded a great number of positive results.

a great/good amount of:
He has taken on a great amount of work in this project.
During the last two years, he accumulated a great amount of wealth.
That's actually a good amount of time for a single level.
a great/good many:
He's been to a great many places.
He knows a great many people in this city.
I knew I was running a great many risks.
I have rather a large influence over a good many people
A good many of those students like this song.
A good many of them have cars.
