Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty- three, battled for half an hourto escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside downin three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route--through the boot(行李箱).
Mr. Johnson’s car had finished up in a ditch(溝渠) at RomneyMarsin, Kent, after skidding on ice and hitting a bank.“Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly,” Mr. Johnsonsaid. “I couldn’t force the doors because they were jammed againstthe walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because Iknew water would come flooding in.”
Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first triedto attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the hornand hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle toescape.
Later he said, “It was really a half penny that saved my life.It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrewthe back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with ahammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came.”
It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further fiveminutes to clear the sweet samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnsonfound a wrench and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutespassed by. “It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. Iforced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the carfilled up.”
His hands and arms cut and bruised,Mr. Johnson got to BeckettFarm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer’s wife, Mrs.Lucy Bates. Trembling in a blanket, he said, “That thirty minutesseemed like hours.” Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mudat the bottom of the ditch.

For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking tounderstand the mystery of the “sixth sense” of direction. By tryingout ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now gettingcloser to one answer. One funny idea is that animals might have abuilt-in compass.
Our earth itself is a big magnet(磁體). So a little magneticneedle that swings freely lines itself with the big earth magnet topoint north and south. When people discovered that idea about athousand years ago and invented the compass, it allowed sailors tonavigate on ocean voyages, even under cloudy skies.
Actually the idea of the living compass came just from observinganimals in nature. Many birds migrate twice a year between theirsummer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousands ofkilometers and mostly at night. Experiments have shown that somebirds can recognize star patterns. But they can keep on course evenunder cloudy skies. How can they do that?
A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding itsway home is the homing pigeon. Not all pigeons can find their wayhome. Those that can are very good at it,and they have been widelystudied
.
One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets to thebirds’ heads to block their magnetic sense——just as a loud radiocan keep you from hearing a call to dinner. On sunny days, that didnot fool the pigeons. Evidently they can use the sun to tell whichway they are going. But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnetscould not find their way. It was as if the magnets had blockedtheir magnetic sense.
Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done withhoneybees. These insects also seem to have a special sense ofdirection.
24. What is the best title for this passage?
A. A great invention——Compass B. “Six sense” of direction
C. Methods of finding directions D. A built-in compass inanimals
25. What contributes to the pigeon’s good sense of directionaccording to the passage?
A. The invention of the compass. B. The existence of theirliving compass.
C. The recognition of star patterns. D. The disturbance ofcloudy weather.
26. Further experiments might be conducted on_______.
A. sparrows B. seagulls C. dolphins D. strawberry

A hospital has been forced to ban Pokemon Go players from thesite after a monster hub(妖怪樞紐站) was found in the A&Edepartment. Royal Stoke University Hospital discovered that itscasualty unit(急診室) is on the same spot as a Pokemon Go ‘gym’ ——where players can train their newly caught Nintendo creatures.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust agreed lastweek that patients can play Pokemon Go on wards because walkingaround is healthy. But the Trust has been forced to post a warningon its website about public access to A&E. It said if PokemonGo becomes a major annoyance it would ask Nintendo—— which decideson the locations of the virtual gyms according using GPS——to haveit removed from the premises(道館).
Kevin Parker, associate chief nurse, said: “Members of thepublic who do not need to be at Royal Stoke should not attempt toenter A&E or any other part of the hospital building to playthe game. The A&E department is incredibly busy this summer. Wewant the public to understand that anybody who visits the hospitalsolely to play the game will provide an unwanted distraction to theimportant work of the hospital. I’m also aware of various reportsin the media of unsafe areas that the game has been played in.”
“Royal Stoke University Hospital is a safe area where gamers canenjoy Pokemon Go.” Michelle Harris, the Trust’s manager, said thegame could still be played by those already in hospital. “Werecognise that the Pokemon Go game encourages walking and exercise, which is something that the Trust is equally keen to promote,” shesaid.
There are a number of “walking routes” established throughoutthe Trust that can be used to combine walking and playing the game.“Walking just 30 minutes, five times a week, can help reduce therisk of preventable illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heartdisease.”
There have been several warnings about the game since its UKrelease. Last week a group of teenagers in Wiltshire were leftstranded almost 100ft underground after they gotcarried away searching for Pokemon Go characters. The four boys, aged 16 and 17, ended up getting lost and had to wait to get aphone signal before they could call for help. Eventually, theycontacted Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue team, who took themto safety. Damien Bence, of the fire and rescue team, said:“Pokemon Go is obviously leading people into dangeroussituations.”

A. designed to help patients in hospital recover sooner
B. helping cure such diseases as obesity, diabetes and heartdisease
C. encouraging players to walk and exercise instead of stayingindoors
D. warning teenagers of the places easy to get lost orattacked
28. The A&E department is incredibly busybecause________.
A. more patients’ arrival increases the workload of the A&Edepartment
B. doctors’ playing the game makes the A&E department lessefficient
C. players’ injury increases the workload of the A&Edepartment
D. players’ arrival disturbs the work of the A&Edepartment
29. The underlined word in the last paragraph probablymeans_______.

Any exercise is good exercise, but when it comes to losingweight, it’s hard to beat running. After all, running is one of themost efficient ways to burn calories and get fit without having torestrict your diet. 31 If you’re not a runner yet butinterested in losing weight, here are four reasons running can bethe best exercise for weight loss.
32 When comparing running with walking the same distance, studies find that running will lead to greater weight loss, mostlikely because your resting energy expenditure stays elevated(高的)after you run. In a long-term comparison study of runners andwalkers, calories burned through running led to 90% more weightloss than calories burned through walking.
Running is time-efficient. Even if the myth that running a mileand walking a mile burn the same number of calories were true, running is a considerably faster way to burn those calories.33
Running is convenient. Though many of us have accumulated a vastarsenal(武器,裝備) of GPS gadgets and tech tees over the years, littleis actually required to go running. You can do it alone. You can doit almost anywhere. 34 For this reason alone, running is thebest workout for weight loss because it’s cheap and accessible, andthere are fewer barriers to maintaining a routine, even whiletraveling.
Two words: runner’s high. 35 Fortunately, studies supportwhat many runners have experienced on an anecdotal level—runningcan actually get you high. Scientists have found links betweenmoderate to intense exercise and morphine-like brain chemicals, which explains the occasional flood of thrill that rushes over youduring a hard run. That happy sensation you had after your lastrace makes you want to go for another run, right?
A. Cultivate the good habit of running.
B. Running works even when you’re at rest.
C. You will never stick to a habit if you don’t like it.
D. The first rule of exercising for weight loss is that if youdon’t enjoy it, you won’t stick with it.
E. You don’t need any equipment beyond a pair of runningshoes.
F. If you’re already a runner, keep on.
G. Most people can run two or three times as far as they canwalk in a given amount of time.

I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, whowas a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He satright behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Deckerdidn’t have a coat. Deep Spring is an American college. It is an unusual college. Itis located high in the mountains in California, not in a collegetown. The campus is a collection of old buildings with no beautifulclassrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is itslibrary. Students can use the 17000 books 24 hours a day. Thelibrary is never crowded because there are only 24 students at thecollege, and they are all male. There are only five professors. These teachers believe in the college, but they are not well-paid.In fact, they only get paid about 9000 dollars a year. The collegegives teachers and students something more important than money—peace and quiet. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students arethere to learn and they cannot run away from their problems becausethere is no place to run to. At most colleges, students can closetheir books and go to a film, or they can go out to restaurants orparties, but the students at Deep Springs have completely differentactivities. They can talk to each other or their teachers, or theycan go out for a walk in the mountains, and that' s about it. DeepSprings is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. Thereisn't even one television set on campus.
