An online photo showing a smiling young man committing an unspeakably disrespectful act to the body of a dead monkey is being investigated by local authorities in Xichang, Sichuan Province, the city's forestry bureau confirmed with the Global Times Wednesday.
The photo posted online by a Sina Weibo user named "FuFu0" Monday has been reposted over 10,000 times, with some netizens threatening to conduct a "human-flesh search" to track the man down.
"The man in the photo was shouting 'it's too exciting and awesome' and even invited onlookers to come close and take pictures," a woman surnamed You, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, told the Chengdu-based West China City Daily Wednesday.
"If I had come earlier, maybe I could have stopped the man. The monkey was dead before he skinned it," said You.
Local police are still trying to prove the photo was actually taken at Lushan Mountain as was claimed.
"It's hard to pin down the exact place where the photo was taken. We have set up a team to investigate and we will make the results know as soon as possible," a forestry police officer who refused to give her name told the Global Times.
The Weibo user "FuFu0," who first posted the photo, said she forwarded the photo from a coworker, and refused to reveal the identity of the photographer.
You also said she was so shaken by the scene that the photo she took was blurry, and she didn't upload it.
Monkeys on the mountain are protected by law and killing one can bring a jail sentence, said an official from the wild animal protection department with the forestry bureau.
