The best familyvacation that I ever had was going on a road trip to Myrtle Beach. The trip wasfor 2 weeks during the March break from school. This trip was probably about 20years ago so it was before the time of things like portable video games andbeing able to watch movies in the back seat.
So to pass the many hours of travel my brother and I had toentertain ourselves and each other. My mum would set the back seat up so thatit was our own little playroom. She would pack everything up so that we had abig level area to play in. We would play cards and board games.
When it got to the point where we were at each other’sthroats we would be sent back to our own side of the seat and would beforced to either nap (
打盹)or read by ourselves until we could be friendly to each other again.I can remember us playing for quite some time when we turned the back seat intoa spaceship and traveled around the earth.
Another time we turned it into a kitchen and had a bake-off(食品烘烤賽). But the thing that I remember the most andthat gave us many hours of enjoyment was using each other’s faces as sillyPlasticine(普萊斯蒂辛橡皮泥) and making funny faces. We wouldsee how far we could stretch each other’s mouths open, see how thin we couldmake the other’s eye by pulling on it. We would keep going until one of usbegged for mercy because we had to give our faces a rest.
So while I can remember us having a great time on the beach, laughing a lot trying to put the tent up in the rain, what I remember the mostof that trip and what always makes me smile the most is remembering the painthat our faces would be in after the trip.

D. How to KillTime while Traveling in the Past

We often justuse our sense of sight, touch, smell, and taste to eat food. But what about oursense of hearing? Does sound also affect our dining experience?
A new report answers, “yes,” it does.
That answer comes from researchers at Brigham Young University andColorado State University in the United States. They found that hearing isimportant in the eating experience.
Hearing is often called “the forgotten food sense,” says RyanElder. Elder is an assistant professor of marketing at Brigham YoungUniversity’s Marriott School of Management. He says that if people notice thesound the food makes as they eat it, they might eat less.
On the other hand, watching loud television or listening to loudmusic while eating can hide such noises. And this could lead to overeating.
   For the study
,the researchers wanted to test whether the sounds of eating had anyeffect on how much a person ate. During the experiments, the test subjects woreheadphones and listened to noise at either a high or low audio level. Thenresearchers gave them a crunchy snack: pretzels (脆餅干).The study found that subjects who listened to the higher volume noise ate morepretzels than those with the low audio levels.
Elder says that when hiding the sounds of eating, like when youwatch television or listen to loud music while eating, we take away the senseof hearing. And this may cause you to eat more than you would normally.
The researchers are calling this, the “crunch effect (咀嚼聲奇效).”
The researchers admit that the effects may not seem like much atone meal. But over a week, a month, or a year, all that food can really add up.
7. The text is especially helpful for those who care about  _______.

A.healthy eating    B. food cooking       C.weight losing     D. food tasting
8. Which sense is often ignored in the eating experience?
  A. Sight           B.Smell.           C.Touch.           D. Hearing.

  A. they tasteddelicious                  B. they could make a loud noise
  C. they were cheap                       D. they could be eaten a lot
10. According to the study, if we want to eat less, weshould _______.
  A. listen to ourselves eat                  B.listen to loud music
  C. watch violent television                 D.wear headphone

One year ago, I was sent to work a 26  in an American company. I had to visit my boss first. It wasraining heavily that day. T  27  I was holding an umbrella, mytrouser legs as well as my shoes and socks still got wet. Entering thebuilding, when I s  28  the umbrella and stamped() my feet, I caught sight of my boss walking in. Then, I i 29  went to meet him in his office and introduced

m  30  to him. He said, “Yes, I recognize you. Got yourfeet wet?” I lowered my head to look at my wet trouser legs and I saidhelplessly, “Yeah. It’s raining cats and d  31  , isn’t it?”Staring at me for a moment, the boss said nothing with a smile.

L  32  on, I mentioned theincident of meeting boss to my colleagues. And I realized that I had made a bigfool of myself. It turns out that “Get one’s feet wet” is an American slang (俚語(yǔ)),with the meaning of starting learning something. However, I considered myself humorous and replied with a slang sentence, w 33  describes the rain falling heavily. This was completely o 34  the point. I am lucky that the boss is really gentle and did not p 35  it out at once.
