About Cherishing the Lotus
Chou Tunyí (Song Dynasty)
There are many loveable varieties of flower blossoming from plants grown on land or in water. Tao Yuan Ming in Jin Dynasty just merely like chrysanthemum. Since Tang Dynasty the common people all love peonies. However I only cherish the lotus for it lived in the silt but not imbrued and washed clear ripple without demon. Furthermore, its stem is blank inside and able to ventilate through middle hole and is bolt upright in appearance of shape; it has no branches and tendrils and its aroma is more clear when spreading out; it is straight and clean stood there, and cannot be touched and only be admired in a far view.
I think chrysanthemum is the hermit in flowers, and peony is the rich, while the lotus is the man of noble character. Alas!Being fond of chrysanthemum has been rarely heard since tao later, and cherishing lotus, what people could compare with me? As for loving the peonies, the masses are suitable.
