本周，Art Matters將會(huì)介紹19世紀(jì)美國(guó)文藝界的代表人物。每周一以詩做為起點(diǎn)，因?yàn)樵娛且磺形膶W(xué)藝術(shù)的最高形式。
美國(guó)詩人沃爾特·惠特曼（1819-1892）很大程度上是一個(gè)自學(xué)成材的人。他熟讀荷馬、但丁和莎士比亞，當(dāng)然，還有圣經(jīng)。他做過印刷工人、記者和自由撰稿人，無論何時(shí)都沒有停下過寫作、演講和對(duì)社會(huì)的關(guān)注。1855年，第一版草葉集由他自費(fèi)出版，這時(shí)還只是一本只有12首詩的小冊(cè)子。第二年，包含33首詩作的第二版出版。終其一生，惠特曼都在不斷重寫和擴(kuò)充這部詩集，直到去世的那一年。最終版草葉集一共有383首詩作。
1855年一經(jīng)出版，草葉集就在批評(píng)界引起轟動(dòng)。當(dāng)時(shí)的評(píng)論家說：”此書寫法前所未見，我實(shí)在無法用慣常的評(píng)論語言描述?！坝捎谠趯懽魇址ê蛯懽髦黝}上的開創(chuàng)性，以及對(duì)新美國(guó)的民主和個(gè)人史詩般的歌唱，草葉集對(duì)美國(guó)文學(xué)產(chǎn)生了巨大影響，成為美國(guó)歷史上最偉大的詩集之一。它對(duì)世俗生活和個(gè)人奮斗的歌頌、對(duì)美國(guó)微觀生活和價(jià)值觀演變的展現(xiàn)、對(duì)農(nóng)奴制的抨擊，對(duì)未來高昂的樂觀態(tài)度，甚至被認(rèn)為是美國(guó)流行文化的開端。而草葉集，也成為了代表當(dāng)時(shí)美國(guó)時(shí)代精神的作品。
惠特曼是一個(gè)熱愛自然，嫉惡如仇，充滿生命激情的人，從他的一段文字中可以看出：
'This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning god, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body...........'

As I ponder'd in silence,
Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,
A Phantom arose before me with distrustful aspect,
Terrible in beauty, age, and power,
The genius of poets of old lands,
As to me directing like flame its eyes,
With finger pointing to many immortal songs,
And menacing voice, What singest thou? it said,
Know'st thou not there is but one theme for ever-enduring bards?
And that is the theme of War, the fortune of battles,
The making of perfect soldiers.
Be it so, then I answer'd,
I too haughty Shade also sing war, and a longer and greater one than any,
Waged in my book with varying fortune, with flight, advance
