Bed size refers to the dimensions of a mattress and the names by which standard sizes are called. Beds themselves vary widely in size according to the size of the frame and degree of ornamentation but are sold according to the size of mattress they take. The dimensions and names vary considerably around the world, with most countries having their own standards and terminology. In addition, two mattresses with the same nominal size may still vary slightly in actual dimensions, due to manufacturing tolerances, level of padding, and support type. Most people allow the size of their room to determine the size of their mattress; however, the website Land of Beds recommends that a mattress be at least 10 cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in it.[1]

Note: This table uses a conversion formula from international sizes and does not accurately reflect Australian standard sizes. Where the metric system is used, sizes are specified in metric units; where other units are normally or alternatively used, the other unit, or both, may be given; e.g., inches in the United States.[7][8][9]
Modern manufacturing conventions have resulted in a significant number of standard sizes of commercial bedding for mattresses and box springs. Imported beds vary by country of origin as per the table above.
These dimensions are for the mattress—the actual bed frame will be a little larger in order to fully encompass and support the mattress. The thickness of the mattress may vary considerably.
The standard bed sizes are:[10]
In addition to the sizes described above, other sizes have found some acceptance in North America, including:
Most modern beds/mattresses sold in the UK and Ireland are constructed using imperial dimensions[4] but are generally sold in their approximate metric equivalents.[13]
It is worth noting that there are no standardised bed sizes in the UK. Any reference to 'bed sizes' will typically, unless specific to the bed frame dimensions, be referring to 'mattress sizes' as mattresses have a standard size grading. These standard mattress sizes then correspond to their colloquial name as described above e.g. King Size which is 60" × 78" or 150 cm × 200 cm. A common mistake is to use a mattress size as the required space for the full dimensions of the bed and mattress.[17]
Swedish Sizes are sold in the UK; in particular they are the standard sizes supplied by IKEA.[18]
The European king size (180 cm × 200 cm) as well as contemporary Italian beds and furniture have become more popular.[19]
Other sizes (bespoke beds) can be made to order; bed, mattress, and bed linen must all be of compatible size.[19]
Single size beds are usually 90 cm wide by 190 cm long.
Most common sizes for double beds are :[20]
140 cm wide by 190 cm long
160 cm wide by 200 cm long
180 cm wide by 200 cm long (less common, but increasing popularity).
Due to the popularity of imported beds (especially from Ikea), the 200 cm length is becoming more common.
In Italy, beds are classified by name. Standard sizes are:[citation needed]

Due to the popularity of imported beds (especially from Ikea), the 200 cm length is becoming more common.
There are some variations between the Nordic countries, but these are the most common sizes:
Single:[21]
Most beds are 200 cm (79 in) cm long. Extra long beds are usually 220 cm (87 in),[25] but they are rare.
In Portugal the most common sizes for beds are:[26]
Solteiro (single)
80 cm (31.5 inches) wide by 190 cm long (can go up to 105 cm wide by 200 cm long)
Casal (double)
140 cm (55 in) wide by 190, 195 or 200 cm long
Queen Size
160 cm (62.99 inches) or 180 cm (70.86 inches) wide by 190, 195 or 200 cm long
