A comment on last week's posting on the école des Beaux-Arts, Paris asked, was Ingres once the institution's director?

《自畫像》烏菲齊美術(shù)館  佛羅倫薩


This great French painter taught at the école des Beaux-Arts (his alma mater) since 1829. He didn't preside over the school but took up the directorship of the French Academy in Rome, in 1833.


這位法蘭西的大畫家自1829年起成為母校巴黎高美的教授;不過他并未擔(dān)任該校的校長,而是在1833赴任羅馬的法蘭西學(xué)院院長之職。

Even though you are maybe less familiar with or have never heard of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), I'm sure you've seen at least one of these major works:


即使你不太熟悉讓-奧古斯特-多米尼克·安格爾,或者從未聽說過這個(gè)名字,我相信你也至少看過一幅他的名作,比如這幾件:

There are also The Grand Odalisque, The Turkey Bath and The Source, which are so classic that their reproductions have been recurring favors for interior decoration.

One of the three paintings, Jupiter and Thetis, has left its residence museum in Europe in four decades and been shown in China for the first time.


三幅畫中的《朱庇特與忒提斯》是近40年來首次離開它位于歐洲的館藏地、首次來華展出。

An acquisition of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, it has been housed at the Granet Museum in Provence since 1835.  


這件作品是法國國家造型藝術(shù)中心的藏品,自1835年以來一直被藏于位于普羅旺斯的格拉內(nèi)博物館。

This sizeable painting, executed in 1811 while Ingres lived and worked in Italy, measures 3.3 meters in height and 2.6 meters in width.


這幅高3.3米、寬2.6米的巨作是安格爾在1811年創(chuàng)作的,當(dāng)時(shí)他在意大利居住工作。

You need to step back, to keep a certain distance to get an overall view of it.


你得往后站、再往后站,拉開一定距離才能一睹畫的全貌。


The huge size caused great difficulties bringing it from France to Beijing. Workers had to remove the painting from its original frame and place it in a tailor-made case.


要把這么大的一幅畫安全地從法國運(yùn)到北京來,可把法方工作人員難為壞了。最后只好拿掉原來的畫框,又為它特制了一個(gè)運(yùn)輸箱。


Jupiter and Thetis borrows its motif from an episode in Homer's epic poem Iliad.


《朱庇特與忒提斯》取材于荷馬史詩《伊利亞特》的一個(gè)章節(jié)。



The deity in the center is Jupiter, the god of sky in Roman mythology equivalent of Zeus in Greek mythology.


畫面中央的“霸道總裁”就是羅馬神話里的天神朱庇特,相當(dāng)于希臘神話里的宙斯。(太陽系最大行星、木星的英文就是Jupiter)

The desperate woman below who reaches her hand to Jupiter's lower jaw is Thetis, a sea nymph.


下方這位絕望的、伸出手臂去夠朱庇特下顎的是海洋女神忒提斯。



She attempts to stroke Jupiter's beard, she is begging. For what? The fate of her son, Achilles, is in the supreme god's hands.


女神試圖去撫摸男神的胡子,她在乞求對方。為了什么呢?她兒子阿喀琉斯的命運(yùn)就掌握在朱庇特的手中。


(問阿喀琉斯誰啊的同學(xué),復(fù)習(xí)下Achilles' heel這個(gè)詞組。)


And Juno, Jupiter's wife, peers over a cloud from the left.


而畫面左側(cè)是朱庇特的妻子朱諾,正越過云彩密切注視著兩位。



Ingres visualized another episode from Iliad in this painting, Achilles Receiving the Ambassadors of Agamemnon, also on show. 


展出的另一幅安格爾的《阿喀琉斯接見阿伽門農(nóng)使者》同樣取材自《伊利亞特》的情節(jié)。



This is Achilles, the Trojan War hero and the character Iliad centers around.


這就是阿喀琉斯本尊了,特洛伊戰(zhàn)爭英雄,《伊利亞特》亦是圍繞他而展開。


To his right is his close friend Patroclus, who is later killed in the battles.


他的右邊是摯友帕特洛克羅斯,后來戰(zhàn)死沙場。



These are the envoys of Agamemnon who try to convince Achilles to reenter the war.


這幾位就是希臘王阿伽門農(nóng)派來的使者,他們是來勸阿喀琉斯重返戰(zhàn)場的。



Ingres' works exhibit a defense of classicism manifested in the art of ancient Greek and Rome.


從安格爾的作品中能看出他對于古典主義——古希臘和古羅馬時(shí)期藝術(shù)傳統(tǒng)——的推崇。


The third shown piece from Ingres' oeuvre is Torso which is, together with the above painting, from the école des Beaux-Arts' collection.


另一幅展出的安格爾作品是這張《半身人體》,這件和上面介紹的《阿喀琉斯》都來自于巴黎高美的收藏。

Besides painting, Ingres was also known for his passion for playing the violin since youth. He loved it so much that it gave rise to a French expression, violon d'Ingres (violin of Ingres), meaning a second skill or hobby.


除了畫畫呢,安格爾還有個(gè)自青少年時(shí)期培養(yǎng)起來的愛好很出名,拉小提琴(此處想@福爾摩斯),以至于誕生了一個(gè)法語詞組violon d'Ingres,安格爾的小提琴,即指一個(gè)人的第二技能。


While he was the director of French Academy in Rome, Ingres often performed with students and guest artists, including the celebrated Italian musician Niccolo Paganini.


還在羅馬法蘭西學(xué)院任院長的時(shí)候,安格爾就經(jīng)常和學(xué)生、訪問藝術(shù)家一起演奏,包括著名的意大利音樂家尼科羅·帕格尼尼。
