I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia . On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer(拖車) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced. We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house – something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen. On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, "What do you want for your new room?" Expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were surprised when Josh responded, "I just want a bed."The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding. When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning. That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds tog tether, Eric ran into the house to watch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway. As my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, "What is that?"    "A pillow," she replied.     "What do you do with it?" Eric continued to ask.    "When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” I answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as she handed Eric the pillow.    "Oh . . . that's soft," he said, hugging it tightly. Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my Dad gently asks, "Do you have a pillow?" We know exactly what he means.56.The writer’s first volunteer project was         .      A.working on a poor trailer                      B.helping a poor family       C.donating beds and bedding                    D.dealing with a housing problem57.On bearing Josh’s answer, the writer was shocked because         .       A.the family lived in a trailer                     B.he expected to get some toys       C.he didn’t know what a bed was             D.the boys had no bed to sleep in58.From the passage, we can learn that Eric had never seen       before.       A.a(chǎn) trailer               B.a(chǎn) truck                C.a(chǎn) pillow               D.a(chǎn) house59.By saying “Do you have a pillow?”, the writer’s father means that        .      A.what they want to get may be unnecessary       B.they should not waste money on small things       C.they should do more volunteer work for the poor       D.what he will buy is not what they want but a pillow
BThe Great Wall of China is one of Beijing ’s biggest draws for tourists; despite its fame and ubiquity in postcards across the world, it rarely fails to attract tourists at the first proper sight.Yet the authorities open only certain sections of the wall as fit for viewing, and few get to visit the unauthorized sections.
Fewer still are aware of the existence of at least one part of the Wall that remains in almost original condition, nearly 1,500 years after construction of legendary fortification began. But there’s a good reason for this – it’s underwater.American journalist Steven Schwankert has been diving since age 10. It was though his setting – up of a diving school that Schwankert came to explore some of lesser – known areas of China ’s lakes – and discovered the underwater Wall under a reservoir.“The most fascinating piece of diving I ever did in China must be the Great Wall. I managed to find out about it via the Internet. It wasn’t difficult to get to Pan Jiakou in Hebei Province , near the East Qing Tomb about 4 hour’s drive from Beijing . Why do I want to dive the Great Wall? Why do people want to walk on the Great Wall? It’s the same answer.”There are, however, advantages of visiting the Great Wall in a diving suit over being on foot. The water acts as a preservative by preventing the kind of mass tourism that has brought trouble on other parts of the Wall. “Unlike the people who walk in the Wall, we as divers never need to actually touch it. I’ve dived twice there, the last time in July. I found that the water then was much deeper than it was before – 13 meters deep.” When he first dived, parts of the Wall were visible above the surface. Now even the guard tower is completely submerged. “It’s better that the Wall is deep under water, as there are lots of boats coming in and out around that area. Their wave action could potentially damage the brickwork. So, the deeper, the better.”60.Steven Schwankert is most interested in           .       A.collecting photos of the Wall                 B.walking along on the Wall       C.diving the underwater Wall                    D.visiting some famous lakes61.What does the underlined word “submerged” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?       A.Damaged by water.                              B.Washed by water.       C.Preserved by water.                             D.Covered by water.62.What is the topic discussed in the last paragraph?       A.Advantages of walking on the Great Wall.       B.Advantages of visiting the underwater Wall.       C.The reasons why the Wall is deep under water.       D.The reasons why the underwater Wall is protected.63.What can we infer from the text?      A.The underwater Wall will sink deeper year by year.       B.Diving the Wall is popular with divers all over the world.       C.Diving is a good way to visit the Wall without causing much damage.       D.More and more tourists will come to visit the underwater Wall in China . CIt is thought that crying is hardly an activity encouraged by society. Tear, whether they are of sorrow, anger, or joy, typically make Americans feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. The shedder of tears (落淚者) is likely to apologize, even when a great tragedy was the cause. The observer of tears is likely to do everything possible to put an end to the emotional tears. But judging from recent studies of crying behavior, both those responses to tears are often inappropriate and may even be counterproductive (適得其反).Humans are the only animals clearly known to shed emotional tears. Since evolution has given rise to few purposeless physiological responses, it is logical to assume that crying has one or more functions that enhance (increase) survival. Although some observers have suggested that crying is a way to ask for assistance form others (as a crying baby might from its mother), the shedding of tears is hardly necessary to get help. Vocal cries would have been quite enough, more likely than tears to gain attention. So, it appears, there must be something special about tears themselves. Indeed, the new studies suggest that emotional tears may play a direct role in alleviating stress, University of Minnesota researchers who are studying the chemical composition of tears have recently isolated two important chemicals from emotional tears. Both chemicals are found only in tears that are shed in response to emotion. Tears shed because of exposure to cut onion would contain no such substance. Other researchers are investigating the usefulness of tears as a means of diagnosing human ills and monitoring drugs. At Tulane University ’s Teat Analysis Laboratory Dr. Peter Kastl and his colleagues report that they can use tears to detect drug abuse, to study the causes of “dry eye” syndrome(綜合癥)and the effects of eye surgery, and perhaps even to measure exposure to environmental pollutants. 64.What does the phrase “both those responses” in Paragraph 1 refer to ?       A.Crying out of sorrow and shedding tears for happiness.        B.The embarrassment and unpleasant sensation of the observers.        C.The tear shedder’s apology and the observer’s effort to stop the crying.        D.Linking illness with crying and finding the chemical composition of tears. 65.From the passage we can infer that        .       A.it is unnatural for people to shed tears       B.we can reduce our stress by shedding tears       C.shedders of tears can’t get help by crying loudly       D.unlike animals, humans can shed tears for survival66.What does the passage mainly talk about?       A.Roles of emotional tears.                      B.functions of shedding tears.       C.Unwelcome shedders of tears.              D.Research on the effects of tears. DDear College DeanIt is my understanding that this college has received a large donation to be used to enhance (improve) the quality of life for students: expand the bookstore or add computers to the computer lab. It is the tradition of this school to promote education and to be at the vanguard of new technology. That is why I strongly argue in favor of the addition of more computers to the computer lab. Although expanding the campus bookstore to include CDs, gifts, and a snack bar will give a nicer look to the college, we have to think about a greater goal and a more practical way to enhance the quality of life for students. What do we want for our students and our college? Do we want our college to be known as a place with a great bookstore where you can find CDs and gifts, or as a place where the students can explore and research in their field using the best tools provided by technology? In addition, there are already several snack bars on campus, and there are music stores nearby, so students do not depend on the college bookstore for these things. We live in a highly technological world and computers play an increasingly important role in how we live. As a learning institution, this college has the responsibility to offer its students the best technology to help them prepare for their future. Many students will be expected to be familiar with the latest software and other tools when they go on to work or to graduate school. While they are in college, students find they are expected to use computers. Many professors expect students to use computers to do homework or to complete projects. Students are asked to create PowerPoint presentations and use spreadsheets and database programs, as well as to research many topics on the Internet. Since students are competing for good grades, those who have limited access to computers are at a great disadvantage. Furthermore, being able to do projects using the computer enhances the process of learning, giving students the opportunity to find information that without a computer would be much more difficult to find. If there are more computers, students will also be able to complete their work more efficiently. No more will they have to wait in line, paper and disk in hand, while scanning the room for an empty chair and computer. No longer will they have to sit and wait while an outdated computer struggles to follow their commands. Having more new and faster computers available will enable students to finish their work more quickly. The more computers are used in society the more colleges will depend on them as a tool of teaching and learning. Making computers more available to students facilitates their learning process by making the process easier, more interesting, more engaging, and in the process enhancing their quality of life    67.The purpose of the author in writing the passage is         .       A.to describe the problems caused by lack of computers       B.to explain why students are in great need of computers       C.to tell us what benefits students can gain from computers       D.to persuade the Dean to purchase more advanced computers68.From the passage we can infer that          .       A.present computers in the college cannot meet the demands of the students       B.computers in the college will be updated to meet the student’s demands soon       C.the college has the responsibility to help the students to prepare for their future       D.it is also necessary to expand the college bookstore by using part of the donation69.In paragraph 4, the author mainly wants to tell us that         .       A.computers are beneficial to students’ academic success       B.computers are helpful to student’s competition for success       C.students find it convenient to do assignments by using computers       D.students wish to use the money to buy more advanced computers70.Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?
Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal – or at least many parts of it have.   71  . Ideas about social class – whether a person is “working - class” or “middle - class” – are one area in which changes have been extremely slow. In the past, the working-class tended to be paid less than middle-class people. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her "housekeeping", would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting. The old style of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was-and still is - inclined to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing, but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important.      72    . Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity (or the education and training) to make such long-term plans.     73   . In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much as their middle – class supervisors (管理者). Social security and laws to improve century, have made it less necessary than before to worry about "tomorrow". Working-class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑感). In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position.        74    .They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes, they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in precious generations.    75   . As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will emerge, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.       A.Nowadays, a great deal has changed       B.Both of these provided him and his family with security       C.As a result, differences in life – styles and attitudes came into existence       D.However, we still have a wide gap between the well – paid and the low - paid       E.In recent years, the working – class people have begun to design long – term plans       F.In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned       G.The changes in both life – styles and attitudes are probably most easily seen amongst younger people第四部分:書面表達(dá)(共兩節(jié),35分)第一節(jié)  情景作文(20分)假設(shè)你是某所中學(xué)的學(xué)生 ,3月22日(世界水日)你參加了你班開(kāi)展的一系列節(jié)水宣傳活動(dòng)。請(qǐng)根據(jù)以下四幅圖的先后順序,以日記的形式記錄當(dāng)天的活動(dòng)內(nèi)容。注意:詞數(shù)不少于60。提示詞:宣傳材料leaflets;危機(jī)crisisMarch 22,2010   Monday  Today is World Water Day.第二節(jié)  開(kāi)放作文(15分)請(qǐng)根據(jù)下面提示,寫一篇短文。詞數(shù)不少于50。In your spoken English class, your teacher shows you the following picture. 四、One possible version:March 22, 2010      Monday                                            SunnyToday is World Water Day. In the morning, we had a class meeting talking about what to do on this special day. Finally, we reached an agreement and immediately began to make preparations for the afternoon’s activities.  At 2:00 pm, we went to the neighboring community to hand out leaflets, calling on people to save water. Around 3 o’clock, the expert we invited made an excellent speech on the current water crisis in China . He talked about the draught in the Southeast and the severe shortage of water in our city. The speech had a strong appeal to all the people present, including me. After the speech, we had a discussion with our neighbors about various ways of saving water in our daily life. I suggested turning off the tap water immediately after use, and a granny came up with the ideas of reusing the water from kitchen, for example, the water after washing fruits and vegetables can be used to water flowers and so on. Today, I have had a better understanding of the importance of saving water and really learned a lot about saving water.

One possible version: In the picture, a huge elephant is walking leisurely forward and above it is a small bird flying gaily ahead. There is a second bird following them. But to my surprise, instead of accompanying the bird in flight, it tries hard to follow in the tracks of the elephant. What the picture conveys to us is that with a powerful influence of a big shot like the elephant, some people go their own way like the bird in flight, while others blindly struggle to copy the big shot and get nowhere, like the bird making every effort to follow in the elephant’s footsteps. Therefore, in the course of pursuing our dreams, we should be aware and make the best of our own strengths rather than stumble behind others embarrassedly ignoring our own strong points.  聽(tīng)力材料:第一節(jié)Text 1  M: How are you getting to the airport tomorrow, Mary? W: I’m going to take the underground. I can get off just inside the airport. A bus is a little bit slow and a taxi is too expensive. Text 2  W: I hear that you’re planning a trip for next summer, Jim?M: I hope to tour Germany if I can finish my degree in time and save enough money.Text 3  M: Hello, everyone. It’s time for our experimental lesson. W: Mr. Smith, Jane is ill. She asked for leave. M: I’m sorry to hear that. Now, before we get started, I’d like to repeat the lab rules    for safety.  Text 4  W: Do you mind if we discuss tomorrow’s agenda before dinner this evening?M: Not at all. I certainly don’t want to discuss it over our meal. Text 5 M: Hello, this is Carl’s garage. We found Mr. Wood’s wallet here after he left his car this morning. W: He has been wondering where he could have left it. He’ll pick it up this afternoon. Now he has to go out to the bank and the post office. Thank you for calling. 第二節(jié)Text 6  M: Jane, here is your dictionary. W: Oh, it’s you who borrowed it. You see, I looked for it everywhere last night.M: I’m so sorry. I must have caused you a lot of trouble.W: It doesn’t matter. Don’t worry about it any more.M: Once again my apologies for all the trouble.   Text 7 Hi, I’m Roris Rily, president of the College Environmental Awareness Club. Before we get started, I’d like to thank everyone for coming down to the lake today to help with the cleaning up project. We’ll begin by dividing into 3 teams. One team will pick up litter in the picnic areas; one will do it along the jogging paths. We’ll be putting the litter in these plastic trash bags. Then we’ll take them to the recycling center. A local business has donated these “Do Not Litter” signs to the club. So the rest will place them around the lake. Text 8  W: Hi, Jim.M: Hi, Alice . What’s that?   W: It’s my protest, that is, some suggestions to the government. Do you want to sign it?M: A protest? Who for?W: It’s against doing tests on animals. I’m going to send it to all the companies that test medicines on animals.M: What? Are you pulling my leg?W: No, I’m not, Jim. This is serious. Do you want to sign it?M: Yes, I do.W: Well then, sign!M: Hold on. They need to test medicines and drugs, don’t they? They can’t give them to people without testing them.W: Look, Jim. There are lots of other ways to cure illnesses without using drugs. M: I don’t know about that. Anyway, people are more important than animals. W: Animals have rights too, you know.M: Of course, they do. But people have more rights.W: Jim! I can’t believe my ears! Don’t you like animals?M: Of course I do, but…    Text 9      W: Hi, David! Mr. Harper has just asked me if you’d finished your project yet. It was supposed to be in yesterday. M: I know. I’m just finishing it now. W: He wanted to know if we’d done them together. I said no. What’s yours on? It took me ages to do mine. M: Well, I was really lucky. I found this book all about the population in New Zealand cities.W: Is it good?M: Yes, it’s great—look! I photocopied three chapters. There are some brilliant charts and…W: What are you going to do with all that?M: Well, now I’m going to copy these pages and these charts and then I’ll finish my project!W: You’re not supposed to just copy the book.M: Oh! I think Mr. Harper won’t know. W: He will know! He asked us to write a list of all the books we’d used. Remember? That’s not the point anyway…M: What is the point then?W: Well, the point is that you’re supposed to write your own project—you can’t copy someone else’s writing. M: Er…er…. Well, you’re right. Thank you for your reminding me of that. 第三節(jié)Text 10W: Can I help you, sir? M: I’d like to open a savings account. W: All right, sir. I’ll need some information to fill out an application for you. May I have your name, please? M: Cooper, C-o-o-p-e-r. My first name is Frank. W: Social Security Number? M: 072-60-9753. W: OK. Do you want to open a regular or current account? M: A regular account. W: How much would you like to put in the account? M: Twenty-five thousand dollars, I mean, Canadian dollars.  W: We offer a choice of three-month, six-month, and twelve-month savings deposit. And we have some other choices of savings deposit you can choose from. So what maturity would you like to choose? M: I’d like the twelve-month savings account. W:All right. Let’s go to the teller and we’ll get you a passbook.
